Fire Island Day Thirty One (last morning)

July 31, 2012

10. Vacation’s last day/
Clouds line Eastern horizon:/
Blue skies otherwise/

11. Sadness at leaving/
Hides excitement for starting/
The next part of life/

12. Tomorrow’s sunrise/
Will observe me at my home/
Thinking of my life/

13. Sunrises’ beauty/
Requires human observers/
People make beauty/

Fire Island Day Twenty~Nine

July 29, 2012

20. Choppy waves below/
Lap insistently under/
Low grey clouds above/

21. Cold grey sunrise starts/
Another moist paradise/
For our enjoyment/

22. Not appropriate/
For vacation photographs/
But still important/

23. Vacation includes/
Cold that dare not speak its name/
Which I must love too/

24. Life is not constant/
Comfort or pleasure for us*/
Savor discomfort/
#haiku *Man

25. Discomfort gives us/
Awareness of simple life/
Which is all we have/

26. Constant comfort numbs/
Living beings into “selfs:”/

27. Individuals:/
People disconnected from/
The flow of living/

28. Constant convenience:/
Frictionless living’s unreal*/
Burden still exists/
#haiku *unfair

29. In this universe/
Everything must be done/
By someone someplace/

30. The fan that cools you/
Made in a hot factory/
By someone who’s hot/

31. Convenience is made/
Available to people/
By someone’s labor/

32. Remember to show/
Simplicity’s Gratitude/
When life is easy/

33. Enjoy life’s friction/
It is the only measure/
Of reality/

34. Cold fingers can hold/
More human reality/
Because of their will/

35. Grab life with fingers/
Cold and raw with submission/
To human kindness/

Haiku Journal Fire Island Day Seventeen

July 17, 2012

18. I woke late and tired/
Distracted I found routines/
Of soul distraction/

19. I avoided myself/
As I stumbled back to “life”/
I didn’t think much/

20. Facebook & Twitter/
NPR & other tasks/
Stole meditation/

21. Modern rituals/
Of social information/
Kill contemplation/

22. Time spent with myself/
Challenges my “public self”/
Here is where doubt lies/

23a. Thinking of myself/
As a soul that I control/
Shows me how I slack/

23b. Exposing myself/
Examining my routines/
Of selfish comfort/

25. I use rituals/
Regardless of how noble/
To limit myself/

26. I’m alive and free/
Capable of being great/
But that’s not easy/

27. To be truly free/
I must sacrifice comfort/
Of the familiar/

28. The freedom I “want:”/
Described by society/
Is base privilege/

29. The freedom I “need:”/
Spiritual transcendence/
Will cost me comfort/

30. Participation:/
It is easy to enjoy/
Cruel advantages/

31. Eschewing this place/
Of petty petty domination/
Challenges comfort/

32. I worked hard within/
This unfair human system/
To enjoy my place/

33. “Succeeding” suggests/
You must accept this system/
(That you know’s unfair)/

34. I’m doing better/
Because I’m lucky enough/
To exist right here/

35. Less fortunate/
Aren’t any less deserving/
Just more unlucky/

36. I want to transcend/
This venal system of mine/
& be happier/

37. The “revolution”/
I need to happen’s within/
Not political/

38. I’d be happier/
If I corrected myself/
& escaped habit/

39. I am the system/
I despise so thoroughly/
(Though it comforts me)/

40. I’ll work to improve/
Personal behaviors &/

Fire Island Day Fifteen

July 15, 2012

28. Look within yourself/
For that which you seek without/
We are all equal/

29. Perfection resides/
Not in the warm beach sunrise/
But the eyes that see/

30. Heaven is living/
Within our realities/
Not others’ ideas/

31. World so abundant/
We should all be surfeited/
Though then we’d lose wealth/

32. Our humility/
Could make us so prosperous/
In a newer way/

Fire Island Day Eleven

July 11, 2012

18. Absolutely flat/
Bay reflects the iron sky/
Setting a new mood/

19. Absence is presence/
The lack of waves and wind says/
Something bluster cannot/

20. Why do I write here?/
I write because I have to/
I have words to share/

21. Is writing Ego/
Or a noble endeavor?/
I may never know/

22. Are these words wasted/
Sent off to oblivion/
Or do they matter?/

23. Will they move readers/
To consider existence/
In some newer light/

24. Or are the words lost/
Only bawdy graffiti/
Meant to annoy folks?/

25. I think these poems/
Are like the sacred * whispers/
Meant for only some/
#haiku *wicked

26. Philosophical/
Musings on society/
Are Nonsense to most/

27. My words: graffiti/
A quiet* cry from Ego/
To assert my life/
#haiku *wicked

28. Graffiti is lost/
Because it’s vandalism/
In “property’s world”/

29. Twittering #haikus:/
Writing on rusted-shut doors/
Hoping to be read/

30. I scribble like this/
To express my opinions/
Because they matter/

31. My little #haikus/
Wether or not they are read/
Cast ideas out/

32. Thank you for reading/
I write each of these for you/
& nobody else/

Fire Island Day 10

July 10, 2012

2. Life’s small surprises:/
Often the most important/
When looking backward/

3. Important events/
The fullness of time recasts/
As meaningless things/

4. “Being Completely”/
Means accepting any changes/
To narrative’s weight*/
#haiku *To story’s meaning

5. The stories we tell/
Contain meanings we cherish/
Others see others/

6. Stories’ meanings tell/
The interpreter’s values/
Rarely any truth/

7. The meanings you see/
Are merely your own values/
Not ultimate truth/

8. “Ultimate Truth” lives/
Beyond where mortals* reside/
“Truth” is not for us/
#haiku *humans

9. If you are “certain”/
Remember that time’s fullness/
Reveals more to us/

10. “More will be revealed”/
Means do your best for right now:/
Be ready to change/

11. Humbly accepting/
That you were totally wrong/
Is how to evolve/

12. The reason I write/
Is to try to develop/
Into something more/

13. Learning my mistakes/
Creates a humbler me/
(Who might be happy)/

14. Humility shows/
Happiness cannot carry/
Too much “Correctness”/

15. Knowledge is Ego/
As much as it is a “fact:”/
We must distinguish/

16. Escaping Ego,/
The social identity,/
Creates a new me/

Fire Island Day Nine

July 9, 2012

41. A choppy morning/
With the East’s steady headwind/
Promises nothing/

42. Premonitions lack/
Empirical importance/
(Though satisfying)/

43. Reality’s script/
Is never revealed to us/
We just play our parts/

44. Good actors’ feelings/
Believable without fact/
Because they try hard/

45. Interpreting lines/
Finding meaning’s dark shading/
Won’t predict the truth*/
*Can’t tell the future

46. So without the script/
& authorial intent/
Just enjoy the show/

47. Judge not the players/
Don’t compare people to books/
Simply admire life/

48. Judgement satisfies:/
Binding Creation to tales/
We can understand/

49. Though repeated, tides/
Are never identical/
Accept each anew/

50. Don’t mask creation/
To fit mortal predictions/
(Stretch understanding)/

51. My understanding/
Like ev’ry living human/
Is feeble at best/
